That Lady Eagles faced tough competition at the Wetumpka tournament over the weekend as ACA lost to Elmore County and PCA before defeating Russellville. The Eagles played a hot Elmore County squad on Friday afternoon to start play on Friday. The Lady Panthers had won eleven straight games coming into the match up against ACA. The game was scoreless for two innings until Elmore County scored all five of its runs in the top of the third aided by two Eagle errors. ACA scratched one run across in the fourth on a Hayley Cassidy double, but were unable to score again for the 5-1 defeat. Cassidy, whose bat is starting to heat up, led the offense with a 2 for 3 day with a double and an RBI. Izzy Warrick took the loss in the circle despite none of the runs given up were earned by Elmore County.
Game two pitted ACA against PCA and the two teams battled in a one run game for the second time this year. Unfortunately, for the Eagles, PCA has won both contests. Alabama Christian trailed 7-3 heading to the final frame, but scored five runs to take an 8-7 lead. Skylar Crews led off the inning with a single followed by walks to Annabelle Pugh and Izzy Warrick to load the bases. Haley Ingram knocked in Crews with a single to center and the bases remained loaded. Hayley Cassidy drove in the next run on a fielder’s choice and Katie Cahappell tied the game with a two-run single scoring Warrick and Ingram. KG Taylor broke the tie with a single to left for the 8-7 lead. PCA responded with a solo homer to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth and won the game three batters later with a base hit to right field and the 9-8 win. Skylar Crews, Haley Ingram and Annabelle Pugh each had two hits to lead the offense. Hayley Cassidy drove in four runs with a 1 for 4 day with a triple, but took the loss in the circle.
ACA salvaged the last game of the tournament with a win over Russellville, 4-2. Like the previous weekend, Rose Costanza showed up when her team needed a win and led the Eagles to victory. Costanza pitched the full six innings with 12 strikeouts against the Golden Tigers. With two outs in the first Haley Ingram and Costanza connected on back-to-back doubles for an early 1-0 lead. The duo struck again in the third as Ingram singled in Ava Oates and Costanza doubled in Izzy Warrick and Ingram to extend the lead to 4-0. Russellville scored two runs in the sixth, but it wasn’t enough as ACA won 4-2. Ingram finished the game 3 for 3 with two doubles and an RBI with two runs scored. Costanza was 2 for 3 with two doubles and three RBIs.
The Lady Eagles return to Wetumpka on Tuesday for their next contest against the Indians.
