Softball

Alabama Christian dominated in its Area opening games by blanking Bullock County 15-0, 15-0 on Monday afternoon. Monday was the fifth and sixth times Bullock County has been held hitless against the Eagles. Rose Costanza tossed the first no-no as she struck out seven of the nine hitters she faced and did not allow a ball to the outfield. Izzy Warrick led the offense with a 2 for 3 game with two RBI’s and three runs scored. Hayley Cassidy and KG Taylor both drove in two runs apiece while Annabelle Pugh scored three runs.

The Eagles scored a run in the opener against Dadeville as Zac Westbrook led off the game with a double and later scored an a Brandon Bice grounder. After Dadeville took the lead in the third, ACA scored two in the fourth to retake the lead. The two runs came courtesy of Hayes Hunt and Jalen Clark singles to retake the lead 3-2. However, Alabama Christian could not hold it as Dadeville scored in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings for the 5-3 win. On the mound, Hunt took the loss with four strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings pitched.

ACA Sweeps Doubleheader to Defeat St James in First Area Series of the Season

After losing game one in extra innings on Thursday, Alabama Christian knew they had to win both ends of a doubleheader to own the tiebreaker over St James in the Area. It was an intense atmosphere at the AUM baseball complex as the Eagles silenced the Trojans 6-2 in the first game and held on for the series win with a 6-5 victory in the nightcap. Both teams stand at 1-1 in Area play, but ACA has the advantage after taking two of three.

In the opener, St James scratched across a run in the top of the first on an RBI ground out, but there was no further damage as Trey Schlemmer threw out a would be base stealer to end the frame. In the second inning, the first two Eagles reached via Trojan errors. Jack Thomas tied the game as he scored on a passed ball and Jalen Clark singled home Preston Hicks to give the Eagles a lead they would never relinquish. Clark later scored on a Thomas Stovall single to stretch the lead to 3-1. Two more errors helped two more runs score and ACA had a commanding 5-1 advantage. Five runs were more than enough for starting pitcher Isaac Warrick who kept the Trojan offense in check. The lefty allowed only four hits and struck out eight in the complete game effort. The Eagles last run of the night came in the fourth inning as Mason Prestage hustled down the line to avoid a double play that allowed Zac Westbrook to score the team’s sixth run. Westbrook’s three hits led the offense as the senior shortstop finished 3 for 4 with a double and a run scored. Brandon Bice went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored while Mason Prestage was 2 for 4 with a run driven in.

In the second game, Zac Westbrook led off the bottom of the first with a laser over the right field wall to give the Eagles momentum and a 1-0 lead. Although St James scored a run in the top of the second to tie the game the Eagles responded and all the energy remained in the Alabama Christian dugout. With the game tied in the bottom of the second Jalen Clark knocked in Preston Hicks and Hayes Hunt with a double to right for the 3-1 lead. One inning later, Isaac Warrick doubled in Mason Prestage and later scored on a Trey Schlemmer sacrifice fly to expand the lead to 5-1. In the top of the fifth the Trojans scored two runs on back-to-back errors to cut the lead to 5-3. In the bottom half, the Eagles pushed across a run on a Preston Hicks single that would end up being very important before the night was over. In the seventh, starter JT Moorer retired the first two batters and even after a walk looked ready to end the game, but an infield error on a nonchalant throw kept the Trojan’s hopes alive. The next batter hit a two-run single to shrink the lead to 6-5. A pinch runner was inserted at first and promptly stole second base to put the game tying run in scoring position. On a 3-1 pitch, Moorer got the final out of the game on a fly out to Thomas Stovall for the narrow 6-5 triumph. Moorer impressed on the mound with a complete game effort in which he gave up only six hits with three strikeouts. At the plate, it was a total team effort as eight of the nine batters collected one hit while five different players scored runs and five drove in runs.

The Eagles played the first of four games in the 28th annual FCA Jason Armstrong Memorial Baseball Tournament against Trinity at Riverwalk Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. The strange game ended in with an unusual 3-3 tie due to time limitations. The first inning should have been an indicator of the wacky outcome as the two teams combined for four runs on just one hit in the frame. However, the two defenses combined for five errors, three walks, three hit batters and two passed balls which contributed directly to the runs scored in the inning. After one, ACA led by a score of 3-1.

ACA Kicks Off Season at Brew Tech Tournament

The Lady Eagles, along with eighteen other teams, began their season where they hope to be at the end as they participated in the Brew Tech tournament at Lagoon Park. Alabama Christian is the defending 4A state champs, due to the 2020 season being cut short. The Eagles drew PCA in game one on Friday afternoon and fell to the Panthers, 4-3. PCA opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first inning via a passed ball and a solo homer. The ACA offense came alive in the third inning as Izzy Warrick delivered a three-run blast to give the Eagles a 3-2 advantage. However, PCA responded with two more solo shots in the bottom half of the inning to retake the lead 4-3. The Lady Eagles loaded the bases in the final frame with two outs, but were unable to push across any runs. Rose Costanza took the loss as she gave up four runs on only three hits and struck out five.

Game two of the evening was against Beauregard and the Eagles evened their record to 1-1 with the 5-4 victory. After giving up a run in the top of the third, ACA responded with three runs in the bottom half, highlighted by Izzy Warrick and Rose Costanza’s back to back doubles and an RBI ground out by Hayley Cassidy. Beauregard hit a three run homer to retake the lead in the top of the fourth before the Eagles last at bat. Annabelle Pugh drove in Lawson Borland with an RBI double to tie the score at 4-4. After a Haley Ingram walk loaded the bases, Warrick singled home Ava Oates for the game winning hit. In addition to her offensive success in the game, Warrick picked up the win in the circle as she gave up two earned runs and struck out four over four innings.

Saturday began against the host school, Brew Tech, in the final pool game for the Eagles. Haley Ingram doubled on the first pitch she saw to lead off the game for ACA and later scored on a Rose Costanza ground out for a 1-0 lead after an inning. However, over the next four innings, the offense produced only two more hits and just three total base runners as the Eagles hit ground ball after ground ball against the Brew Tech hurler. Despite the lack of offense, ACA only trailed 2-1 heading into the final inning, but allowed five Ram runs in the frame for the 7-1 final score. Hayley Cassidy took the loss in the circle as she struck out three over five innings. Besides Ingram, Haley Oswald and Hayley Cassidy were the only other Eagles to collect a hit.

In the final game of their day, ACA took on Lincoln in elimination play. Neither team scored in the first two innings as starting pitcher Rose Costanza worked out of a bases loaded jam in the second. KG Taylor opened the third inning with a walk and eventually scored on Costanza’s two-out single for a 1-0 lead. The bottom half of the inning saw Lincoln score four times as the Eagle defense hurt itself with a lack of communication, indecision with the ball, wild pitches and passed balls that played a part in the runs given up. The offense had no answer as the Eagles did not score over the last two frames. Costanza took the loss despite giving up just three hits and only one earned run over 4 2/3 innings and struck out 11 batters. Costanza, Haley Ingram and Taylor were the only Eagles with hits in the contest.
